Carnival is taking a break this year, and so are we. Today would be the day for dressing up but I must confess, I don’t have great ideas for costumes this year. Not what happened to some Cariocas though. Covid-19 may have cancelled carnival this year but, in Rio de Janeiro, pet lovers from around the city gathered on Saturday for an annual competition for best dog costume. In New Orleans, Mardi Gras has also been forced to shift its focus, from parades to houses. People are decorating their houses and turning them into stationary versions of the usual decorated floats that roll in the city every year. In Germany, puppets are taking the stage instead of people, in a parade to be watched on TV. Carnival bands are giving concerts in drive-in movie theaters, encouraging people to wear costumes and decorate their cars. We can’t say people lack imagination and the will to party, even if several meters apart, each in their own space. What about you, Filipe? Any alternative ideas to celebrate Carnival, where you live? I know that I’m staying indoors pretty much as everyone else I know. The cat can dress up as a dog and do its own parade. Spoiler: he will win best costume.
